Brendan Syron is a Biripi man completing his third-year electrical apprenticeship on the RPA Hospital Redevelopment with subcontractors Stowe
Can you provide an overview of your role with CPB on the RPA Hospital redevelopment?
I am a mature-age, third-year electrical apprentice with Stowe. I was involved in the early stages of the main works, where we completed investigation works, decommissioned the Tissue Pathology and Diagnostic Oncology Department and former Chapel, and I am now assisting with the circuiting of the new building.
What made you want to pursue a career in construction and engineering?
I spent most of my working life as a hotel manager licensee. Once COVID-19 hit, the hospitality industry was impacted and made me reconsider what I wanted to do. A lot of my family have always worked in trades but I didn’t know if I should enter the field in my late 30s. Electrical trades seemed hard but I wanted to face the challenge and it was the best decision I have made. I have always been passionate about electronics and my home renovations throughout life showed that I was a bit of a natural at it. I am fascinated by electricity and how it carries us through life! It is part of everything.
How has your Aboriginal heritage influenced your career?
My heritage pushes me to be the best role model for others. I am a hard worker and I want to beat the negative stereotype that some people have about Aboriginal people.
How can the construction industry better support Aboriginal professionals and businesses?
I think the industry does a great job at supporting Aboriginal people. A lot of my family work in construction and I believe it is one of the most inclusive industries. The cultures on site are so vast and everyone gets along to ensure the best project outcomes.
How does CPB include Aboriginal perspectives and influence into their construction projects?
From what I’ve seen, CPB are very engaged with ceremonies, elder involvement, talks, and consultation. CPB are culturally sensitive and engage local mobs and Aboriginal people to understand the environment they’re working in and the land they’re working on.
How does Aboriginal engagement positively impact project outcomes and community relations?
Engagement and involvement will ensure buy-in from community. From design through to construction it is vital to have community input to ensure usability of final outcomes. Building welcoming spaces for all people will help close the gap and increase life expectancies of Aboriginal people.
What are some ways we can continue to encourage Aboriginal youth to pursue careers in engineering and construction?
Early engagement is always best. There is a lot of drop-out from Aboriginal youth from what I feel could be lack of confidence. If we have more school programs that are tailored to trades, we could support, mentor and encourage youth to see a different path that may be better suited to them. The earlier you can get children on the right path, the better.
What did you study at TAFE?
Electrical Engineering
What are your career aspirations?
I commenced this journey to be an electrician. I have been so lucky to have so much exposure to different aspects of the trade and look forward to finishing my studies and continuing to work with Stowe on these amazing projects. Stowe’s values and vision align with mine and I work with great people. I am open to whatever opportunities come my way.
What are three words your family would use to describe you?
Hard working, fun and a bit of a push-over
What’s your favourite song to get you pumped for work?
Pink Floyd – Another Brick in the Wall.
Last great TV show or movie you watched?
The Boys.
If you’re cooking dinner, what will everyone be eating?
Keep it simple with some sausages and steaks on the barbecue.
